Indian Princess Gold Coin
Back in 1832, there was a proposal for a US Three Dollar Coin to be created. However, the mint director during the time Samuel Moore quickly threw that idea out of the window. And there’s no doubt that this decision is reasonable. There was no need for a three dollar gold coin, especially in 1832. Think about it – there is very little gold available to use for the creation of 3-dollar gold coins. But everything changed when 1848 came and gold was unveiled at the foothills of California. This ushered the Gold Rush years – and led the demand for a higher production of gold coins and more gold denominations.
Needless to say, this made the creation of the 3 dollar gold coin – the Indian Princess Gold Coin a plausible idea. After all, back then, there is a 3 cent gold coin that the average citizen could use to buy a stamp. So why not create a gold coin – the Indian Princess Gold Coin that could be used to buy 100 stamps? Well, that may not be the true reason why the Indian Princess Gold coin, which is worth 3 dollars, is created and minted. But one can be sure that gold lobbyists wanted another US gold coin denomination to increase the value of gold. And they worked hard for it!
That’s why when February of 1853 came, the Congress approved the idea for the new coin denomination…leading to the creation of the Indian Princess Gold Coin. The minting and creation of the Indian Princess Gold Coin is short lived however. When 1889 came, the US Mint ceased its production of this 3 dollar gold piece. Truth be told, the production of the Indian Princess Gold Coin lasted longer than it should. But that’s great news for today’s coin collectors! That means there are many dates for this Indian Princess Gold Coin to choose from. However, one should expect that these dates for this series of gold coins are rare and quite expensive.
Aside from 1854 Indian Princess Gold Coin, there are only 3 significant dates and mintages – that would be 1855 with 50,555 gold coins minted, the other would be 1874 with 41,820, and last but not the least, 82,324 back in 1878. As for the other dates, the mintages are only a few thousands. Heck! Some are even under 100! Here’s an example, in 1875, there were only 20 Indian Princess Gold coins that were struck and all of them are in Proof Format. In the same manner, the 1873 Indian Princess Gold Coins are all Proof Issues. That shows how rare and expensive the Indian Princess Gold Coins are…especially the Proof issues and formats.
